I was thinking about recent enjoyable reads, and the first book that came to mind was A Marine at the Door by Eddie Vega – a Columbia University Journalism School graduate and entrepreneur who’s got a lot or irons in the fire. He’s the head editor of several imprints under the Vegawire umbrella. Vega is a real pro in the writing game, and his skill is intense.
A Marine at the Door grabbed my attention and I read it in one sitting. That’s right, I only took one quick break to fetch a cold drink from the fridge. Then I repositioned myself on the couch and thundered through the text at breakneck speed. That was partly because of Vega’s strong, poetic prose and tight sentences, but also because the story was enjoyable and fun.
Vega is a master storyteller. I was impressed with his talent. His style is very lean, yet nothing is missing. Every word is necessary. Scenes were fully developed and characters were three-dimensional.
I like books that move around a bit. Who doesn’t like a journey? A Marine at the Door took me on a refreshing tour of Manhattan and Brooklyn and the surrounding neighborhoods. Vega's sharp attention to detail made me feel like I was part of the experience. And here’s what I liked best about A Marine at the Door: Vega’s work allowed me to dive into NYC subculture and pop culture, and had me re-examine perspectives of self, other, and the world in which we live. And he had me laughing while doing so! Very fun read. Highly recommended.
